Keith S. Burton, the fourteenth superintendent of the Caddo Parish School Board, is a dedicated educator with over 33 years of service to the district. Hailing from Minden, Louisiana, Burton grew up in a rural area where hard work was instilled early in life. His mother was a teacher in Webster Parish for 34 years, and his father ran a small business and served on the Webster Parish School Board. These strong family values and a legacy of education shaped Burton’s lifelong commitment to education and public service.
Beginning his career in 1992 as a classroom teacher, Burton spent nine years teaching, primarily focusing on history and math. His unique approach to education and unwavering desire to ignite an excitement for learning inside all of his students led to him being named the first Louisiana teacher named as a Milken Educator Award winner.
He transitioned into school administration, serving as both an elementary and middle school principal in Caddo Parish. In 2013, he was named Chief Academic Officer, where he oversaw curriculum development, accountability, and special education while also leading key initiatives such as creating the Caddo Teaching Academy and Caddo Virtual Academy.
In October 2024, Burton became superintendent of Caddo Parish Schools. His leadership is focused on creating a student-centered approach, expanding early childhood education, increasing literacy, and enhancing teacher and principal development. He is also committed to fostering innovation to address the district’s challenges.
A significant source of pride for Burton is his family’s multigenerational dedication to education. His mother’s long teaching career, his father’s service on the school board, and his grandmother’s work as a school bus driver and cafeteria worker in Webster Parish reflect a deep-rooted family tradition. Burton's pride extends to his own family, as his wife, an educator for over 32 years, teaches in Caddo Parish. His two sons and daughter have also followed in his footsteps — one serving as an assistant principal and the other as a teacher, while his daughter is in her first year in education as a kindergarten teacher.
Burton’s personal and professional life is a testament to his deep commitment to education, and his leadership continues to build on the values passed down through generations of educators in his family.
Burton pursued higher education at Louisiana Tech University and LSU-Shreveport, earning his Bachelor of Arts in Education. He continued his studies, earning a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership from LSU-Shreveport, and has more than 45 graduate hours from Centenary College and LSU-Shreveport.
Beyond his commitment to education, Burton is deeply involved in his community. His extensive service includes:
